Whether or not English is your first language, if you are working on an important essay, report, or document, the value of having an independent editor proofread your work is invaluable.
When you are thinking and writing, your mind can often play tricks on you. You are typing what you are thinking, but it is easy to make mistakes. However when you read your own work back, you don’t see the mistakes because you have in your mind what you thought you were writing. Spellcheck on your word processing program is definitely a big help, and it will pick up all of the obvious mistakes, but it’s the small little errors that you don’t see such as a missed word, or a word spelled correctly but it’s not grammatically correct – I’ve made these mistakes so many times that I’ve now come to the realisation that the only way to ensure that something is 100% correct is to get a third-party proofreader to independently review my work when it is something that has to be perfect.
Don’t let small typing or grammatical errors undermine the quality of your work and the quality of your words. Use all the resources that you have available to ensure that you are presenting your best self to the world.
